How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?
The most common question we’re asked by prospective clients is, “How much will it cost”?
Fortunately, hiring an excellent private attorney to handle your family law needs is not as expensive as you might think. However, at the same time, this is not an easy question to answer in most cases.
First, let’s look at how an attorney is paid. For family law cases, the Judnich Law Office charges an hourly rate that’s deducted from the initial retainer payment. Once a case is fully resolved, any unused portions of the retainer are refunded to the client within 48 hours. A discounted rate is charged for paralegal work on the case and any other actual costs we incur.
We usually require a $5,000.00 payment as a retainer for our services.
Does that mean you are paying $5,000 for your divorce? No.
What is a Retainer?
A retainer is a set amount of money set aside so we can start working on your case. As we continue our work, every two weeks we will send out a billing statement that shows what work has been done on your case.
The statement shows how much that work cost, and how much retainer you have left.
If your case is relatively straight-forward and requires minimal hours to complete, you will be refunded any unused portion of the retainer. So you may pay less than $5,000 for your divorce. In more complicated cases that cost more than $5,000, an additional retainer may be required.
Think of it this way– at $200 per hour, it will take only 25 hours to reach $5,000. 25 hours isn’t that much time when you think about it. Think about every telephone call, every brief that has to be filed, every negotiation with the other side, and every consultation between the attorney and the client.
It adds up.
So, before you think you can’t afford a private attorney, think about how much effort you want spent on your divorce, child parenting plan, and general family law services.
You get what you pay for.
Do you really want to an attorney who doesn’t charge much, but also doesn’t pay attention to your case, doesn’t return calls and doesn’t devote as many hours as it takes to achieve your goals?
Or do you want an attorney to spend as much time as necessary to achieve the goals you want to meet in a timely manner, so that you can live the rest of your life knowing you resolved your family law matters the right way, the first time?
